Coffee is a very sensitive and delicate plant that only grows in certain areas and under distinctive conditions. Exact plantation settings and special care are very important for the coffee shrubs to grow, prosper, and bear fruits.

The coffee plant’s botanical name is Coffea. It is classified in the family of Rubiaceae, which consists of approximately 500 genera with more than 6,000 species, Coffea being one of them. However, not all of these species are similar to the coffee plant we know today. Only two species are economically important: Coffea Arabica and Coffea Canephora, better known as Arabica and Robusta. Arabica accounts for 61% of the global harvest amount, while Robusta sums up about 39%. Two further types of coffee are botanically comparable with these two: Coffea Liberica and Coffea Excelsea. However, these are of minor economic importance.

 

 

Today, coffee is usually cultivated in a large-scale manner. The crops can grow up to 4 meters in height, but on the plantations they are usually cut down so that they rather have a bush-like form. The long branches yield oval-shaped evergreen leaves. Looking closer at these leaves, they show a dark green, coriaceous surface and a lighter shade on the underside. The pole-like roots grow about 1 to 2.5 meters into the ground.
